Although the ADA requires Braille,
tactile letters, and consistent height placement for identification signage,
finding these signs is a challenge for visually impaired visitors.
Coco Raynes Associates, Inc. developed the Raynes Rail to provide the
missing link between the entrance of a building and the desired location.
The Raynes Rail combines continuous Braille messages on its inner face,
with audio modules positioned at strategic locations. The Braille and
audio information describe the entire floor plan and inform the visitor
of what is ahead, such as offices, facilities, departments, elevator banks,
and emergency exits, or warns them of physical changes in the corridor
pattern, such as turns, ramps, or stairs.
Method of Installation
The Rail can be installed in different configurations in order to provide
full orientation and/or directional descriptive information: Continuous
handrail, Non-continuous handrails, Short segments incorporated in directories
and display systems.
Handrail Profiles and Materials
The Raynes Rail is available in different profiles and materials, including
wood, metal and custom designs.
Tubular Metal
Rail -
Diameters rage from 1.5" to 2"
Available in several metals, finishes and colors including brass and stainless
steel with satin or mirror finish.
For exterior use, the galvanized steel versions, with custom powder coating,
offer extreme durability and low maintenance.
Flat Wooden Rail
The Rails are either made to order or the PVC extrusion is incorporated
into the client’s own design. Most existing rails can be retrofitted.
Braille Inserts
As in any sign program, the Rail accommodates changes, deletions, and
additions of messages. The modular system of Braille and blank inserts
can be adjusted on-site to the precise position. Inserts are fastened
into a metal groove with tamperproof screws for vandal hazard areas and
exterior use.
Audio Units
The optional audio units are integrated into the Rail at strategic locations.
The audio messages which are activated by photosensors without any personal
devices, permit multilingual applications.
Installation
The audio unit is activated by a photosensor with 9 volt wiring, or by
a push-button with standard 9 volt batteries which provide 70,000 message
repeats.
Recording
Messages can be recorded on- or off-site and changes in a few seconds.
Message length
The audio units have 1-minute or 3-minute capabilities. The activation
time is adjustable for 0–5 seconds.
Retrofitting
Most existing rails can be retrofitted to receive the audio system.
